African twerking and the Sauti za Busara festival – African hip hop radio Jan 2014

The January edition of African hip hop radio kicks off with a couple of real hip hop bangers, female artist L-Ness from Kenya sets the tone with two tracks from her Gal Power album. Later into the show, Amal and J4 move across the continent and diaspora with some of the brightest new talents on the scene, including Kwabs (Ghana/UK), Raiza Biza (Rwanda/New Zealand) and Mnek (Nigeria/UK). As usual the crates run deep with Awengele, an ungoogleable psych rock funk from Kenya, dug up from Nairobi by J4 last month, and the ‘Afrobeat’ LP from 1970’s Ghana which could be viewed as a predecessor to Europeans’ fascination with the term Afrobeat – see below for its hopelessly stereotypical artwork. We look back at 2013 which sparked a new craze in Ivory Coast with the Kuiata dance, and compare it to other booty dance styles originating in Somalia, Ivory Coast, Kenya and more, which predate the popularity of twerking. Yes, the twerk has African origins (and the Kuitata mix in this picture actually exists here on Youtube).

Listen through Soundcloud (2 hours):

In the second hour, J4 and Amal phone Tanzania to speak to Dave Tinning of Sauti za Busara festival (13 to 16 February in Zanzibar, Tanzania). He talks about a new addition to this year’s festival: the Santuri Safari program in which deejays from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Germany (including Tendwa, St Evo and the Teichmann brothers who were on the BLNRB compilation) play the festival afterparties and participate in workshops looking at ways to integrate regional musical traditions into their music, and selling these productions to an international audience. Dave is also the coordinator of the Tanzania Heritage Project which is in the process of digitizing the huge musical archive of Tanzania’s state owned Radio Tanzania (now TBC) and together with he is working on reissuing early 70s funk/soul music from Tanzania.
