There’s something quite extraordinary about Roy O. Hailing from Houston, TX by way of Nigeria, this rapper/songwriter is in a unique lane all his own.
What sets Roy O, real name Oghogho Roy Efemena Osagie Mukoro, apart from the rest is that his story does not begin in the streets, nor does he pretend it does. Growing up in Port-Harcourt City, Nigeria, Roy O moved to the United States to rebuild his future, fleeing political persecution after his uncle staged a coup. Now, as a college graduate, holding a Master’s Degree in Busi- ness Administration, Roy O brings a new viewpoint to hip hop music; the perspective of an African immigrant who happens to be an accountant, martial arts black belt, and basketball player.
Roy O began his musical journey in 2010 after realizing that he had a God-given duty to use his gifts to benefit the world. He credits J. Cole for giving him the kick he needed to start taking his talents seriously. “I’ve always felt that I could make music but the turning point was hearing J. Cole’s “The Warm Up” mixtape. After hearing his story, I knew if he can make it to Jay-Z, any- thing was possible with work ethic and talent. Music is my way to impact the world positively.”
Now, with an impressive catalog under his belt and an upward career trajectory in his future, Roy O continues to make music for the urban professional who dares to stand out.
