Hiv Hop Concert in Cape Town, South Africa Bush Radio 89.5 FM, a community radio station in Cape Town, South Africa recognises World Aids Day 2000 with an Aids Awareness event utilising hiphop and other popular expression. Combatting AIDS and working towards solutions are international concerns and is a global effort. This year Bush Radio recognises December 1st World AIDS Day by producing an educational AIDS awareness event that uses popular music as a vehicle to address HIV and AIDS issues. The aim behind this is to make the messages more appealing and accessible to the youth community around HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and tolerance. This unique event, otherwise known as Bush Radio’s HIV HOP Concert is produced in partnership with VOA (Voice of America). The project has also received support from Black Entertainment Television (BET), Cable Positive, the cable and communications industry’s AIDS action organization, and World Vision, an international Christian humanitarian organization. Freeplay Foundation and Telkom have also added meaningful in-kind contributions to the effort. The program Starting at 2PM, at Princeton High in Mitchell’s Plain, with DJ ---Ready D and Oscar spinning tunes sandwiching acts such as BVK (Brasse Vannie Kaap), a popular hip-hop group, Mr. Devious, an emcee/rapper, Dantai, a popular Cape Town Kwaaito group, D-Low, M, Godessa and Cool Funk. The concert will definitely be worth checking out as this is where you will hear for the first time original music and lyrics written and composed by the artists just for this World AIDS Day event. Throughout the event, speakers from various organizations will also make short presentations to address the youth. The HIV HOP Concert will be documented by both Voice of America filmmaker, Jerry Brown as well as BET’s “Hits from the street”. The concert will be broadcast live on Bush Radio 89.5FM. Date: Friday 1 December 2000 Time: 2-6 PM Location: Princeton High, Woodlands, Mitchell’s Plain (Corner of Bergsig and Mitchells Avenue) Cost: R5 (all proceeds go to Princeton High) Also, as a reminder, this Friday November 24th, from 2-4:30 PM, Bush Radio will have its last Teen Town Meeting at Princeton High. All youth are encouraged to join in this month’s discussion which will focus on people living with HIV/AIDS.
