Hip Hop in Tanzania

Tanzanian hip hop has been in development over the last ten years. Now there is a vibrant scene which has dropped some gems and keeps on surprising with ever more new stuff coming out, or at least finding its way onto DAT and cassette.
This page gives a brief overview of all the crews that have played their part lately. There are several special pages on artists from Tanzania (see the menu to the right). Also check out the audio files section and listen to Tanzanian online radio. Make sure you peep the weekly East African hip hop charts from Uhuru FM (Dar es Salaam) and Tanzanian hip hop updates in the top 10 section.
Older news has been published under 'Updates' down at this page, in the Mwaka 2000 section and in the interviews section.

R.I.P. D-Rob

Picture: D-Rob (left) and Rhymson at Coco Beach, 1996

We received the very sad news that Tanzanian rap veteran D-Rob (Robert Mwingira) passed away on the 18th of May after a short illness in Dar es Salaam.
His death came as a shock to us, and to all Tanzanian hiphop fans who knew Rob as one of the longest standing local hiphop artists. A true pioneer and innovator, he was first heard on now classic tracks like 'Amani' which hit the Tanzanian airwaves in 1993.

Like the 1st Kwanza Unit album, the second one 'Tropical Tekniqs' never hit the local stores and it was only with 'Kwanzanians' in 1999 that people could get hold of his work. Rob could be seen in the video to 'Run Tingz', still a regular on ITV. He featured with Rhymson on the Red Cross sponsored track 'So why', and his voice is still heard daily in a couple of radio commercials.

His lyrics in the classic track 'Msafiri' (1999) seem like a prophecy to his early departure:
Nataka kupiga bunda duniani, kama motoni naota ndoto za peponi. Namwona shetani, ananiuliza wewe nani na unataka nini? Pesa, magari, na majumba ya kifahari. Njoo nifuate mimi.
'I want to leave this earth, like hell I am dreaming of heaven. I see a spirit, asking me 'who are you and what do you want?' Money, cars, and big houses. Come follow me....

We learnt from Rob that a Swahili lyricist can be on level with the best of English language emcees. Another lesson he left to the younger generation is that even in the harsh musical climate of East Africa, it is possible to keep a crew together. After band members KBC and Rhymson went to work and study abroad, he kept the KU fire burning and had started working on a new album.
More word soon from the remaining KU members who are planning to record memorial tracks.

Listen to one of D-Rob's favourite KU tracks 'Msafiri' (with a sample by King Kiki) in which Rob did the second verse:

Straight from the sewer, now on video

The Bamiza video: G-Son, Zig-Lah & Rough nell (pic: J4)

In July 2000, Tanzanian hiphop crew X Plastaz spent some time with us shooting a video in Arusha, Tanzania. The 3 member crew gained nation wide popularity in 1998 with their 'Bamiza' which hit number one in the charts.
The video is showing daily on all national TV stations in Tanzania, and on KTN and Nation TV in Kenya.

It is the first in a series of 'new school' Tanzanian music videos. Dola Soul's 'Nani na nani' will also be available before the end of the year, and other Tanzanian emcees also have plans of shooting videos.

X Plastaz compare their style to that of Das EFX, but they listen to all kinds of music including French rap (they don't speak the language though) and traditional music. Stay tuned for our updates soon about a tour of Tanzanian emcees to Holland in June next year - this includes the X Plastaz!

Here at the Africanhiphop.com site you can have an exclusive online preview of 'Bamiza' in realvideo!
To view the clip you will need the Realplayer 8.0 software (free at www.real.com, don't download the paid 'plus' version!).

If you have a slow connection, download the 'Bamiza' video here.
If you have cable, T1 or DSL connection you can try viewing it 'streaming' by clicking here.
The file size is about 5 MB.

Dola Soul's 'Nani na Nani'

The other video shot in Tanzanian in 2000 is Dola Soul's 'Nani na Nani' which can now be viewed online. Click one of the links below to view the video in streaming realvideo format (Realplayer 8 needed, see www.real.com to download the player).

Aang Serian

You might have seen the X Plastaz, and the way they are influenced by traditional music. Now together with other musicians in Arusha (Tanzania) they are in Aang Serian, a group performing musical styles that are part of the heritage of East Africa. Aang serian (Peace village) is more than that: it is a cultural organization managed and operated primarily by young Maasai. Its mission is to preserve and promote indigenous culture.

Updates

The news of June 2000 provided by Dola Soul:
-On Sunday June 18, Mr II launched his new album at Bilicanas - a tight show, well organized and the sound was OK. There were guest appearnces by crews like Dogg Posse, Hard Blasters, Mabaga Fresh, Mack D , Lady JD and Dola Soul.

More album launches
On the 25th of June, Hard Blasters are launching their album. The old school crew (first single aound 1993) have made a big come back with their hit single 'Chemsa bongo' which is being played round the clock on every radio station. All verses where done by 'Nigga jay' one of the members of the crew, while his mates are on the hook. It's a tight song with a very positive message.

Kenya's most high profile hip hop crew Kalamashaka is down in Tanzania recording there album at P-Funk's studio. It is going to be a a double album with different producers including Master Jay, Rajjab Marijan (son of singer Marijani Rajabu) and Ludi. Seems like Tanzania's hip hop producers start getting internationally aknowledged...

Albums being recorded
The unique are in the studios now recording their album at Master Jay's crib. They are now switching over to Swahili and local lingo. One single off the album is called Sikiliza, which features Hashim.

Mabbaga Fresh, Gangwe Mob, Dogg Posse also are recording they are being produced by Bonny Luv, at P-Funk's studio.

There was a talent show organised by Clouds FM on the 11th June at the Mambo Club. The winners got a chance to record at P Funk and Master Jays studio.

Updates of March 2000:
-Clouds FM are about to drop an R & B album next month, featuring some of their presenters. Tanzania has a high level of rappers and singers who are also radio deejays. In Clouds, there is Jay Dee, an R & B singer, Makanga who did some choruses with Kwanza Unit... The beats were provided by Master Jay.
-Sebastian Maganga is now a dj with Uhuru FM, a new radio station in which he got a lot of creative control and is doing the 'Deiwaka' show witha lot of local content. Rapper Sos B is now at Radio One with his own show, and we got Steve B from the Underground Souls at East Africa FM. The latter is, like Sebastian, trying hard to get more local talents in his show.
-Makoya Man, ragga singer known for 'Buzi' (1997, see our lyrics section), has just come back from South Africa where he recorded a mini album. We listened and it's superb with nice production! He is inspired by Buju Banton, but in fact he can do 5 different voices. Apart from using Kiswahili he can do ragga in Arabic language. He's still looking for distribution in Tanzania.

Album cover of the month December 99

This album by Saleh J (the picture above) was the first Swahili language rap album that got wide distribution in East Africa in the early nineties. In fact it still is one of the few local rap cassettes that you can buy all over Tanzania. The lay-out is so outrageous that we had to give the designer props: they don't make 'em like this anymore, now that Photoshop has become available almost worldwide. Mind the details: there's a pic of Vanilla Ice, whose Ice Ice Baby is covered by Saleh (in Swahili)! Our featured mc claimed to be King of Swahili rap, probably after he won the annual Tanzanian rap award. It was his last album though, and he is no longer rapping.

The same image was used on our mixtape 'Rumba-Kali' which we distributed in Holland in 1996 (see picture to the left). The tape featured a track by Saleh, and more by POC, Musa K, PBS, WWA and others.
It was probably the first compilation of hip hop from all over Africa, and it lead to the realaudio shows that are online at this site. Certainly the year 2000 is to bring more than one commercially available compilation though, and not only from our side.

Chuck D receives first copy Madunia release

The tape of Mr 2's 'Nje ya Bongo' which is out now in Tanzania, was officially presented to Public Enemy's Chuck D while he was on a promotional visit to Amsterdam in July 1999. Chuck has been working on an independent release of his new album, therefor he had much respect for the efforts. Interesting is that both Chuck and Flava Flav learnt some Kiswahili in the early seventies in their 'African awareness' class; recently in an interview Flava showed that he still remembers part of his vocabulary.

Tanzanian crews - an overview

Afro Reign
Members: Bonny Harmony, Nature P, Dray, J.D.

Nature P, a.k.a. Sebastian Muganga has his own daily radio show "Deiwaka" at Uhuru FM, promoting local artists to the fullest (and he's one of the few dj's in town to do so!). In the past he used to do the daily Dj show at Radio One.
Read a little more about Afro Reign in the
Tanzania Update from February 1998. The tracks they recorded in 1996 and 1997 with producer P-Funk are the 'bom-diggie', a nice flow over a great jazz-inspred beat.

Bantu Pound
Members: Nigger Pure, Kassie, Soggy Doggy
Albums: Ilala (98)

Read more about Bantu Pound in an update from 1997. It's said that in 1999, the Pound is no longer with all members going solo. Whatever may be, we saw Soggy Doggy performing some of his songs and he was stronger than ever with a track called 'If you happy and you know it' which, unlike the title sugggest, is in Kiswahili. Read the Soggy interview here.
There's also Mack D, who isn't really part of the group but hanging out with Bantu Pound, he's done a solo track called 'Twiga' and an album coming out in 2000.

Best G
Solo artist
Read his biography (Swahili only)

Boombastic
Members: Ally, Hamdani
Albums: Swahili Rap Zanzibar (96)

This is the former group of Ally who is now with Da Struggling Islanders. They recorded a few songs in 1996, using instrumentals like Mc Lyte's and California Love. The result was put on tape and distributed locally in Zanzibar. Ally still uses the name 'Boombastic Sound' for his mobile sound system which can be hired for weddings ('rusha roho') and birthdays.

Bugsy Malone
Solo
Tracks: Keep it tight, Utaona (1998)

Very gifted young mc who on being interviewed by South African television was mistaken for an American rapper. However his lyrical content is strictly his own and he's with the Kwanza Unit Foundation. Read more about who Bugsy is in the interview.

The Clouds
Members: Sindilla, Othman Jaidi & others
Albums: Msela (95)

The Clouds are well remembered for their hit 'Msela' which was the first ever production from Mawingu studio. The track was so popular that 'msela' is still part of popular expression in Swahili. Many of the Clouds group members are now working with Clouds FM radio station. Clouds itself still engages in fresh productions like this one, where popular artists are brough together.

Contish
Members: Abdul, Hakim
Albums: Mabishoo (94)

The Mabishoo tape was widely available in Tanzania and so it has contributed largely to today's rap styles. Ragga instrumentals mixed live at Fuji disco in Zanzibar, this tape has a live feel. Hakim went solo later on and dropped an album 'Kim Pekee' ('Kim on his own') with strictly local distribution. Then he stopped rapping for some time, but recently he felt like making a come-back in ragga when Ally Cool Para approached him for the use of his lyrics on a new track fusing taarab and rap called 'Nayaweza'.

Cool James
Members: solo
Albums: Zooming you (95), Soft like a pillow (97), Bi Harusi (1998), Sukuma Land (2000)

The mack who used to live in Sweden, made big bucks by selling millions of his Euro-house style singles as 'Cool James & Black Teacher'. Then he came back home (his origins are in Mwanza), now has his own studio and records mainly r&b kind of songs. However he even did a rumba kind of album which really was a fusion of ndombolo (Zairean) style with modern dance music. He's not really in the local hip hop scene, more on his own thing.
His 'Sina makosa' (remake of a 70's Swahili hit) was a #1 hit in Kenya in July 2000: 'Nitakupiga risasi'....

De-Plow-Matz
Members: Dola, Saigon, Stigo
Albums: Are you down with the DPT (96), Tha De-Plow-MaTZ (97)

Read more about the DPT or read the essay Problems facing DPT and other rap crews in Tanzania by Dola Soul, member of DPT and Rumba-Kali correspondent. Dola is preparing a solo album, read more about it here. Saigon was also making a solo joint but in the process he got the chance to study in the UK for one year. One of the tracks for his album was 'Au siyo', a collaboration with the Kenyan group Kalamashaka and his producer P-Funk. See our sounds section for the MP3.

Dola Soul
Solo emcee
Albums: Balozi wenu (1999)

After most of Deplowmatz left Dar es Salaam to study upcountry or abroad, Dola Soul was left to protect the flag. He set up a succesful solo carreer and has been an example to many younger emcees. Being very serious about improving the state of music business in Dar, he went to seek more fair deals between distributors, studio people and emcees. A first result was his album Balozi wenu which sold well, and which he promoted himself. Dola Soul is working together with Mr II whom he joins on tour all over Tanzania.
The crowd is waiting for new work from Dola Soul; more news on his current projects soon at the site. Read more about the artist and his first solo album at our special page.

E-Attack
Members: solo

Solo artist with a few English language tracks on his name. He even does e-mail freestyling these days, being one of the few Tanzanian emcees with a regular e-mail connection. Currently away from home to get educated in the town of Bagamoyo. Check out his website at Rumba-Kali.

Ebony Moalim
Members: solo
Albums: Never gonna change feeling (96)

Graphic designer who's also rapping, singing and organizing fashion shows in Dar city. There's been a second release after his debut, not a full album yet and we didn't get to hear it. He did his own album sleeve design, and some posters for Mawingu disco.

Five Toilers
Members: Brathe 1, Mr White, Cholo B, MC S, Big H

Still at school but in their free time they are outside in Zanzibar town rapping, all five of them. They did some recordings and then the master tape got lost. Also did a track with the five members of Struggling Islanders, now that's a posse track clocking ten minutes.

Flavour Dogz
Members: Crazy, Izzack Dog, Spac Dog, Jocob, Yzee

From the Arusha school of rappers, this posse which includes the Hardcore Unity (HU), infamous for their 'HU' shouts. Rap si mchezo (Rap is not a game!) is what they're all about. They are together in a crew with the X Plastaz. Yzee is also good at ragga toasting, even in Jamaican Patois. There is also the youngest rapper I've seen in Tanzania, a 13 year old mc of Indian parents. They hang out in Arusha's Mawingu Club, or Crystal Club on sunday afternoons.

Foolz Skool
Members: Harris Naught Wailer, Solid G, Solo K
Albums: Down with Foolz Skool

Young crew of three who recorded a 90 minute tape full of tracks over the last three years including some recordings with Master Jay at his studio in Oyster Bay.

Full Soldier

4 Krewz Flava
Members: Moss, Paul, Makey, Klo

Classic r&b group, too bad they split up recently. Known to some as 'Boyz II Men wa Tanzania', they did a lot of concerts in Dar and went on tour to Arusha in 97. Paul went solo and had a hit with his 'Njoo mpenzi' featuring producer/mc Paul 'Halfani'

Gangsters With Matatizo (G.W.M.)
Members: D Chief, Easy Dope, KR

One of the most well-respected crews, known all over for their lyrical genius. Their first album should have been out long ago, but they want to go for a good record deal instead of seeing the boss running with the money. However they can be seen performing now and then at Kilimanjaro's Poolside disco or other occasions.

G'S Mobb/Unique Sisters

Two girls singing and rapping and some male members, they represent Dodoma city. There's one rap in Japanese as the rapper's mother taught her (the language that is, how to rap she learnt from KBC of Kwanza Unit). Party tracks like 'End of the week': 'We gotta get going, cause it's friday night'. Now the girls resurfaced under the name 'Unique Sisters' and have been in the Tanzanian top 10 for weeks.

Halfani (P-Funk)
Most known for his productions (see Tanzanian producers section) but he's also dropped a few lyrics, first with his crew 'No name', and in 1999 recorded a track with Kalamashaka (Kenya) and Saigon for the latter's new album.

Hardblasters
Members: Crazy One, KC 1, Trigger F, Tuff Jam, Luni T
Albums: Mambo ya Mjini (94), Blast Nuff (97), Funga kazi (2000)

This is one of the longest standing Tanzanian groups, from their first release 'Ni Hard Blasters' they have ruled the airwaves. Recently they got a huge hit with the track 'Chemsha Bongo' and the album that came with it (launch: July 2000). You can listen to their tracks in the Top 10 section, read the lyrics to 'Chemsha Bongo' or read the biography in Kiswahili.

Hardcore Unit (HU)
This crew is among the top groups in Arusha. Their 'Rap si mchezo' ('rap is not a game') must be the most powerful rap in Kiswahili ever recorded, with its shouts of 'HUUUU' (short for Hardcore Unit) that made the recorder distort.

Immeditation Kingdom (I.K.)
Members: Killa B, Kon B, Doobie-M, Double M
Albums: Kimara (97)

Killa B goes way back to the first 'Yo Rap Bonanza' rap competitions of the early nineties. Their English language raps go deep. Experience pays off! The 3 track demo that we got hold of was produced at Soundcrafters studio in Temeke. It includes the songs 'Maapu' and 'Kimara flavor', the latter represents their neighbourhood. They are into rastafarianism.

Jontwa Jokeri
Albums: Ragga Mchicha (95)

Unique style raggamuffin artist from Mwanza, very dope delivery over hardcore bubbling and ragga tracks. His album was sponsored by Kuleana street children project. Used to rap with Niggaz With Power. Apparently he's in Dar es Salaam now.

Jungle Crewz Posse
Members: Bantoo G-Bro, Bantoo Ren, Bantoo Ciptak
Albums: Bantuwibak (95)

Despite all the 'Bantoo' stuff, this Dar crew has English lyrics as well. A home-made video could be seen on ITV a few times. G-Bro is now living in Namibia.

Kamakazi Soldiers
Albums: Run Tingz & Dedicated

The youngest rappers on earth? 7 Years of age, they sound fierce in 'Simama Kaa'. Production by Paul P-Funk. Their group is no longer as one of them travelled to the USA.

Kim Pekee
Members: solo
Albums: Kim Pekee Rap

Another old school Zanzibari rapper who put his tape out locally. Unfortunately the recording quality is strictly local as well. He was also with Contish (the 'Mabishoo' tape) and is now thinking of a come-back in ragga style.

Kwanza Unit
Members: Rhymson, D-Rob, KBC, Fresh G, Eazy B, Y-Thang
Albums: Tucheze (94), Tropical Tekniqs (95), Kwanzanians (99)

The KU is the longest standing rap group in Tanzania. Their album Kwanzanians is now available with Rumba-Kali. At the Kwanzanians page you can also find their bio.

Group leader Rhymson is now living in Canada. He's started out a website called Maskani in Swahili only about music and other topics in East Africa. Visit it here!

Mac Mooger
Members: solo
Albums: Afrika isidumishwe

Always solo, he's been very busy with three cassettes in stores since 1995. Lately Mac lived in Nairobi where he plans to put his songs on cd. A 1996 video clip and the 2nd album featured Abdallah from X Plastaz (Arusha).

Makoya Man
Members: solo
Albums:Buzi (97)

Some may say that Pemba Islanders don't know what's happening in the world but for sure the world knows about this ragga rapper from Pemba. His song 'Buzi' is well known. It talks about women 'scraping off' husband's skin as if he were a goat. 'Watch out, she only wants you for your money'.

Mr. Ebbo
Members: solo
Albums: Dunya (96)

Arusha is on its own d**k, that's for sure... No mimicking foreign styles or even looking at the Dar rapping. Here's a ragga rapper who's even doing his own beats. Lyrics are conscious as ever.

Mr. II
Members:solo
Albums:Ni Mimi (95), Ndani ya Bongo (96), Niite mr II (97), Nje ya Bongo (1999), Millennia (2000), Muziki na Maisha (2001)

Solo artist 2 Proud or Mr II is the face of Swahili rap. From Dar es Salaam to the smallest inland village, everybody seems to know him, his lyrics and even what he looks like. His conscious lyrics refer to street life, the everyday life in Tanzania, politics and more common he does a lot of bragging. Deservedly that is, since he's the only Tanzanian rapper who is able to make a living from his music. The first also to go abroad on a tour to Holland in early 98, Mr II was responsible for having rap taken more seriously in Tanzania. He is down with the DePlowMatz and most of his beats are done by Master Jay or Paul P-Funk.
read his lyrics: Wapi tunakwenda, Moja kwa moja ('96) and Hali halisi ('98)
Also check out his online videoclip of Sema Nao in realvideo (3 MB).

Niggaz With Power (N.W.P.)

Apparently there are two groups by this name. The other is from Mwanza and featured Jontwa Jokeri. At least this group has a tape out, using 1995 instrumentals from KRS-1 and others.

O.C.G.
Members: solo

OCG used to be with the X Plastaz crew from Arusha. Since he is now staying in Dar es Salaam he went solo. His style is very similar to that of XP's but he took the act of one emcee with two voices (a low one and a high-pitched voice) one step further.

Proud Niggaz
Members: Stoppa Rhymes, Lucargo, Kriss G, Eazy J, KB-La

Arusha in the house! Their influences include Junior Mafia, Dr Dre, Bustarhymes, Onyx, NBN, Lost Boyz and Tupac.

Ras Pompidou

A ragga artist who used to perform with live instruments. He did an album which (like most Dar es Salaam recordings) was never commercially available. He fights for the rights of the have-nots.

Rough Niggaz
Albums: Maisha (96)

Group from Tanga who got airplay with their 'Hakuna kama mama' which was a Swahili version of 2Pac's 'Dear Mama'. They can be seen performing an anti-drugs song in a Tanzanian ninja movie called 'Unga Adui' which is out on video tape and deals with a cocaine gang vs the police, Pulp Fiction style.

Saleh J
Members: solo
Albums: Swahili Rap - Ice Ice Baby (91)

Classic stuff, this tape which really is American songs translated to Kiswahili. Saleh was the first (1991) to do an album of Swahili Rap. Ever heard 'Ice Ice Baby' in Swahili? Probably one of the last strictly party albums in Tanzania, as lately conscious lyrics have taken over.

Sos-B
Members: solo

Sos-B entered the local top 10 with his 'Kukuru kakara zako' and some hits after that. Recent work includes 'Saturday' and 3 other tracks recorded using instrumentals by producer Master Jay. He went to Moscow for his studies, but he's in Tanzania again, working as a radio dj for Radio One. Read a massive interview with Sos, by Dola Soul.

The Struggling Islanders
Members: Cool Musa, SJ, Cool Para
Albums: Zanzibar Swahili Rap Vol. 1 (98)

The first Zanzibar group to have a video shown on tv. They came together in 97, with two female and three male rappers. A song about child abuse in Tanzania (rapped over Nas' 'If I ruled the world' beat) , got them well known locally. AA Cool Para (Ally), formerly with Boombastic, is a dj at various spots, at this time for Bwawani FM club. He's the cousin of Dola (Deplowmatz). Early 1998, two members left. The other three won a rap competition which was to take them to Oman for a performance, but unfortunately the money (or tickets) never came - another case of promoters whose mouth is bigger than their pockets?. They have recorded a second album in 1999 and 2000 for Madunia music, and Cool Para featured in the video documentary 'Hali Halisi'.

TID Entertainment

Check out the site of this young thug rapper from Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam. His site includes pics, a discography and several sound files that are hard to download though. Soon we'll have more info about him.

Ugly Face
Members: Mack, Daz, Rich

Read more about Ugly Face in an update by Dola Soul.

Underground Souls
Members: Abbas Maunda, Baraka Kongwa, Steven Mbowe

Underground crew who are well respected by true heads. They used to prefer rappin in English but recently changed their policy. Abbas used to live in England for years, now he's back in Dar and trying to get that first album done. Read more about them in a short update. They got a track played on Radio One in 1998, produced by Master Jay.

Weusi Wagumu Asilia (W.W.A.)
Albums: Sauti ya wagumu (95)

First TZ rap group to record an album in a real studio. The beats suck, we can say now. Their lyrical skills are still appreciated though. This is where we got the name 'RUMBA-KALI' from: it's the name of one of the tracks. To listen to that track, go to the Rumba-Radio section (Show #2: Tanzanian hip hop).

X Plastaz
Members: Rough-Nell, Zig-Lah, G-Son (solo)

The Arusha hip hop heads have rated this group high. Their homestead Mawingu Club Arusha has enjoyed an XPs performance every now & then. The X Plastaz (Rough-Nell and Zig-Lah) and G-Son work in a hair saloon. G-son is performing solo and he even won the Mr Retro Arusha competition at Mawingu Club in 1997 with his afro hair style, dressed in seventies style.
Recently they have been experimenting with Maasai music, and recorded some new tracks that should lead to an album in the year 2000.
