Tanzanian producers (1997)

This section was written late '97; since then several changes have taken place in Tanzania's world of production. For more on producers, see the Mwaka 2000 section where we have updates from the summer of 1999, or read the interview section.

Bonnie Luv

Studio: Mawingu (Sinza/Mwenge, Dar)
Pro: Clouds, Kwanza Unit, Hard Blasters, G's Mobb, Crazy GK
Equipment: ADAT, DAT, 2xTechnics, 16-track mixer

Deejay Bonnie Luv is probably Dar's most well-known dj. He has been running the Mawingu deejay crew for years, playing the major discos in town with a mixture of latest r&b, hip hop and Zairean music. Well developed mixing skills, but also one of the first in TZ to master the art of hip hop scratching. His productions which are done in the small but ever productive Mawingu studios have supported a generation of rappers and singers (even Zairean productions). Lately he's developed a style of sampling without using a sampler: playing a part of an old record in a loop, in synchrony with the beat.
