Hip Hop in Madagascar

Alongside the African continent, Madagascar is unique in more than one way. First of all we all know it for its animal & plant life which has evolved largely independently from the mainland. And the people & cultures are a mixture of everything that's within reach of the boats that have frequented the island over the centuries. Musically, there's been an interesting music tradition (or traditions, with the various ethnic groups) of which the west has been able to get a taste on cd's. Madagascar even has rock bands, so why not hip hop.

Rap in Madagascar is mostly in the national language Malagasy. Since 9 years there's been an annual rap festival 'Up the rap' which was discontinued this year. Luckily there are variosu radio stations still playing rap music. Some time ago there was even a local cd compilation release called 'Rima Gasy', of which few copies were pressed (info thanks to Randy of malagasy.com)

Tana-Cergy

Hip hop theatre group that recently toured France, consisting of members from Malagasy crew The Specialists (another group from Madagascar) and French group Trafic de styles.

Oratan
A group whose name was taken from the local geography: Tanora. Group member Sam together with solo freestyle rapper Teki-nae joined other musicians in 'N3', an experimental project which took in influences from heavy metal (why not, 36 degrees in the shade in the Indian Ocean....) and rap.
