Ghana Music Awards 2000

At this year's Ghana Music Awards there was no escaping: rap artists got nominated in 7 out of 21 categories. Following are the nominees and the winners.

Lord Kenya got nominated for Hip-life rap song of the year (Sikaa Baa)

Reggie Rockstone got nominated for hip-life rap song of the year (Keep Your Eyes on The Road)
He also got nominated for album of the year.

Lifeline family got nominated for hip-life rap song of the year (Wo Sisi). They also got nominated for Best new Group/artist.

Akyeame won the award for hip-life rap song of the year (Mesan aba). They also got nomianted for Song of the year/Hip-life album of the year/Hip-life Song of the year.

Reggie Rockstone was nominated and won the Fontomfrom Merit Award for his pioneering efforts in changing the Ghanaian Music scene and opening the gate for hundreds of youths to be heard expressing themselves thru the medium of Rap.

Lord Kenya did a small rap piece with a Hip-life artist named Daasebre Gyamenah (Ko Koo Ko). This song won hip-life song of the year.

Now Hip-life differs from Hip-life rap in the sense that Hip-Life takes African-American poppy, R-n-B rythyms with 'rent - a rapper' techniques where the rap artists busts some verse in Twi, Ga or Hausa while the chorus to the song is sang in a style similar to what's coming from the USA. The rap is self-explanatory: pure Hip Hop, just in a different language! The fact that Ghana has about 30 radio stations has divided the music scene into pop and underground.
