Rockstone's Me Ka: Vol. 1 Ext. Play Ghana's high caliber and most respected rap artist has returned with a bang to quench the fire of anticipation expressed by almost all corners of Ghanaian society.
The pace-setter or pioneer of rap music in local dialect who set it off with 'Makaa Maka & 'Me Na Me Kae' (mih-nah-me-kah-eh) (I Was The One Who Said It!); has unleashed his long awaited extended play album entitled: 'ME Ka! (meh-ka) (I Will Say!). This is volume one of a two set volume. This seems to be the norm in Africa. When you give the customer more than eight tracks, you may be cheating yourself! The reality is that most cassettes retail around a $1.50 USD! Compare this with the USA where a DMX cassettes retails for $7.99 USD. What we do is keep extra tracks for a volume 2 to make more money. Positive Black Soul of Senegal has done this before. Of course, when we make a compact disc; both volumes will be contained on one disc. ME Ka volume 2 will be released in late January 2001. We will get a lot of mileage out of the first one! Releasing volume 2 will complete the trilogy of the 'sayings' of Rockstone. Alll of the songs are in Twi or English. ME De BE Bom - (meh-di-beh-boom) (I'm about To Hit!) This is a fast-paced song with a similar beat to KRS-ONE's ' Like A Throttle'. This announces the return of Rockstone with his catchy lick; " Aben dada! Na me ka n'ahyE kEkE" (" It's done here! I was just warming it up a little ".) SE WompE No A - ( If You Don't Like Her) uses a very familiar jazzy sound. (SADE's -Nothing can compare to you) This helps to draw you into his tale of domestic violence. Check the video clip. The Mapouka Dance - pays homage to the very infamous dance coming out of La Côte D'Ivoire. The beat is very bouncy à la NYC style. Produced by RAB 'The International'. Definite club banger! It features a slick verse in English by Rockstone and newcomer (former LifeLine Family member-Shyne) re-incarnated into MENSAH. It also features an articulate verse in French by international rap artist; LORD LUST. There is a video clip to this one. Here are some lines from Rockstone: I love the way you do the Mapouka like that! The power that your body generates don't make me want to rap You making these Jamaican women look so wack! Pure African rhythm; the way you make the booty act! Love the rudeness with her artistic movements Only words that come to my mind is that 'goodness' Who be my witness for this be the true definition of the black Princess with the thickness Breakdown all men's wickedness; gotcha saying stuff that don't make no sense Mapouka dance, so intense Make you go home and talk trash to your girlfriend! Mensesa - (I Won't Change) has Rockstone and Mensah exchanging Twi and English lyrics about emcees forgetting where they come from. (they are talking about African emcees!) It's all about humbling oneself to the very public that made them. The Spanish guitar licks by Zapp Mallet make this track mad phat! Do The Do - Samples the 70's funk or afro beat of Manu Dibango's (of Cameroun) Soul Makossa to heat up the dance floor. This Track uses PY Anderson of Incognito (UK) & D-Note (UK) to do the chorus in English. ME Ka Ama N'ahyE Wo - ( I Will Say It So It Hurts) samples from the electronic funk group; Warp 9 of the mid-eighties. This song features OKYEAME SYDNEY of NANANOM. Straight dissing to all who oppose the Hip Hop movement in Ghana. Ohia Nka Mmaa - (Poverty onto Women) is probably the closest to US Hip Hop. Fat beat with thick bass line and an obscure soul sample running through it. All seem to be hits on the Ghana Music scene where most artist get one hit off their cassettes! © 2000 Africanhiphop.com |
