Dj Kofi

One of the most high profile hip hop artists to come out of Ghana is DJ Kofi. Read this short bio by Rab the International.



Kofi started Djing at the age of 12 on his father’s Hi-fi set. After being inspired by several early Hip-Hop tracks and a documentary programme called Hip-Hop history.
By the age of 17 in 1991 DJ Kofi had won the South West England heat of the Technics UK mixing finals and was a runner up in the UK final in 1991. DJ Kofi returned in 1995 and claimed the title of ‘UK Mixing Champion and was 4th runner up in the ‘World Mixing Championship’ of 1995. This was a stepping stone for bigger things to come. 1995 was the year the world began to recognise DJ Kofi. Following the success of the UK Mixing Kofi was invited to join the UK’s Premier black music station Choice FM and given a prime time slot every Friday afternoon between 12 and 1pm to show his turn table wizardry which is still popular as ever to date.

Kofi has also had many guest appearances on the Radio One Rap show and also on Kiss FM. Kofi’s popularity has spread throughout the world and has enabled him to perform in such countries as Lebanon, USA, Kenya, Ghana, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Slovene, France, Belgium, Scotland and Ireland. Due to the nature of his Djing style Kofi has also featured on many TV programmes. These include MTV (Europe), Live TV, Nickelodeon, and MTV (Lebanon), Phat beats Hip Hop show in (New York), Music TV (Kenya), Talking Drums (Ghana) and Club Scene TV Show (Slovenia).

Kofi’s love for Djing, extends to the development of up and coming DJs and has taken time out to teach potential DJs on such courses as ‘Ghetto Grammar’, ‘The Brit. School’, The DJ Work Shop and School of Audio Engineering. His services have also been requested by the ‘Princes’ Trust’, which is headed by the Prince of Wales. DJ Kofi is one the most sought after mix tape DJs and has been recognised by some of the world’s major record labels. Record Company Mix Tapes under his belt are the Universal Records Mix Tape Volume II, the Sony Street Team Mix Tape Volume III and the Def Jams Red Man and Method Man’s Black Out promotional Mix Tape.

DJ Kofi is not only recognised by Record Companies but also by major artist such as:
· Black Street who used Kofi’s Real Live Turntable mix as a major selling point for the single ‘Money can’t by me love’.
· Spice Girls who used Kofi to perform scratching on a track on their last LP.
· Killah Priest down with the Wu Tang Clan who employed DJ Kofi as his DJ on his UK tour.
· Lauren Hill who used Kofi’s crowd rocking expertise to work the crowd in to frenzy at her UK After Party.

DJ Kofi has hosted many talent shows, but is most recognised for his work with Top UK comedian Richard Blackwood in the Hip-Hop Comedy Show. Kofi is currently in his final year of his degree in Commercial Music at the University of Westminster. DJ Kofi’s musical talent extends to production and he is working on an album to be delivered in the latter part of the year 2000.
