Hip Hop in Angola

Army Squad
Members: Sandocan, General Tarz, Man Killa, General Snake, Dj El
Album (to be released autumn 2000): Generais de Cinco Estrelas

Army Squad is a crew based in Cape Town, South Africa. They are all originally from Angola. Their lyrics are Portuguese and they target the home market as well as Portugal and Brazil.
In 2000 they have come together with South African producers duo MG Partners - that's Salty G and Marty Mar. MG have done production, recording, engineering of their music and produced the videoclip to their song 'Os amigos'.
They gave us two of their tracks which you can listen to in realaudio:
-Os Amigos
-Conquistar

On 'Conquistar' you can hear scratching provided by Ready D from Prophets of da City.

The Army Squad so far has been quite succesful in Angola. The crew is currently negotiating about releasing the music in other Portuguese speaking countries.
Take a look at the Army Squad photo album here, and check back soon for an online viewing of the 'Os amigos' videoclip!

Mutu Moxy
Solo

In Cape Town we hooked up with Angolan mc Mutu Moxy, who rhymes in Portuguese and Umbundu. After some years in Cape Town, he still hadn't managed to hook up with local emcees, though he did record with long-time producer Caramel. Life as an immigrant in Cape Town is really hard, and some people have a high level of xenophobia. Some time ago, Mutu's fellow emcees from Angola died when their house in Langa township was set on fire. Now he is doing things by himself, and hopefully his web presence will give him some exposure and contacts in the industry.

Listen to Mutu's songs in streaming realaudio:
- Ceremonia Aberta
- Fica a questao.

Click here to read his bio in Portuguese - an English version will be added.
