Dplanet & Spooky (Pioneer Unit), Blick Bassy

dplanet1

In April, South African Dplanet & Spooky from the Cape Town-based label Pioneer Unit visited the African hip hop radio studio in Amsterdam.
Originally from Europe (UK and Belgium), they moved to South Africa over a decade ago. In recent years producer Dplanet and designer/video director Spooky have become involved with the local hip hop scene, releasing music and doing promotion.

In the studio they talk about the history of the label, the new releases by Rattex, Ben Sharpa and Driemanskap and what it’s like to work from Cape Town while many of the national South African media and businesses are based in Johannesburg. They are joined in the studio by Mustafa Maluka, visual artist now living in Finland and one of the originators of the Africanhiphop.com website. On the phone is Blick Bassy, a young singer/songwriter from Cameroon in France who just released his debut album through the Dutch label World Connection.

Note: this show was recorded for the Dutch edition of African hip hop radio. Presentation is in Dutch, the interviews are in English.
